MTR Corporation is regarded as one of the world's leading railways operators for safety, customer service and cost efficiency. Its railway forms the backbone of Hong Kong's extensive public transport network and delivers passengers to their destinations with a 99.9% on-time performance.

The Corporation was established in 1975 with a mission to construct and operate an urban metro system for Hong Kong. In June 2000 it was re-established as MTR Corporation Limited and in October 2000 was listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. On 2 December 2007 the operations of the Government-owned rail operator, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, were merged into the MTR, heralding a new era in Hong Kong railway development.

The merged rail network comprises nine commuter railway lines, a Light Rail network and an Airport Express link, with an average weekday patronage of more than 5.5 million passengers.

In addition to its railway operations, the Corporation is involved in a wide range of business activities in Hong Kong. These include the development of residential and commercial property projects, property management, shopping malls leasing and management, advertising media and telecommunication services in trains and stations. 

Building on its world-class railway services in Hong Kong, MTR has taken its expertise in railway development into the Mainland of China and taken on a range of railway-related projects and operations internationally. In the Mainland of China, the Corporation has been involved in the construction of and now operates Beijing Metro Line 4 and Line 14, Shenzhen Metro Line 4 (Longhua Line) and Hangzhou Metro Line 1. The Corporation has been awarded concessions to operate and manage London Crossrail in the United Kingdom, Melbourne Metro in Australia, and Stockholm Metro and Regional Train in Sweden, where it also operates intercity service between Stockholm and Gothenburg. 

In September 2014 the Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium, of which the Corporation is a shareholder, was awarded the Operations, Trains and Systems Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract for the North West Rail Link project in Sydney. MTR's  latest expansion is in the Mainland of China - in February 2015 Beijing MTR Corporation Limited, of which the Corporation is a shareholder, initialled the investment, operations and maintenance PPP Concession Agreement for Beijing Metro Line 16.

The Corporation also offers worldwide railway consultancy and contracting services. Clients served include metro companies, government authorities and rail system suppliers in the Mainland of China, India, Australia, the Middle East, Latin America and Southeast Asia.
